L.A. Fashion Week

Note: Did this article for a website that’s no longer up. Sorry no links, but it was a great opportunity for me to write for fashion week L.A.

Fashion has a different tone wherever you go. From the east to the west coast, ideals on what is trending in style may vary. Los Angeles has a style comparable to none. The social scene is dictated heavily by who’s wearing what, when, and how. The market is geared towards making a statement, being iconic, and representing California’s laid-back sensibility to the fullest. Throughout this article, we will focus on the highlights of Los Angeles Fashion Week, such as themes, color palettes, and key items of the season. As you read you can see for yourself just why Los Angeles Fashion is second to none!

For some reason, L.A. fashion for the upcoming season had an unexpected “dark” feel. For example; a common trend, which was heavily featured, was Victorian Gothic Chic. It was constantly being shown for holiday and evening wear. Textiles included lace fabric inter-weaved with black satin and chiffon laced embroidery. Twinkling embellishments such as sequin and faux jewelry were highly sought after in evening wear and even casual ready-to-wear cardigans. The themes were very romantic and incorporated a wide variety of furs. Fur seemed to be the go-to textile of the season in Los Angeles, which is surprising since the west coast is known for its beautiful warm climate.

Sexy items such as the cape and crop top jacket are being chosen over the more traditional tailored blazer.  Monochromatic color palettes were also featured throughout Los Angeles fashion week. Such dark palettes are unusual for such a bright climate, maybe that is why the Club Kidz theme was created to offset the gloomy seasonal looks. The Club Kidz look is inspired by the early 1990s and punk 1980s club scene. See-through fabrics made of mesh, colorful dyed leather, and mismatched patterns in bright color tones represent the look for this theme. The youthful essence of this trend is further emphasized by its go-to accessories; plastic necklaces, bangles, and earrings. The color palette consists of ice pinks, neon greens, electric purple, and anything metallic or reflective. The key items featured with this trend are crop tops, decorative leggings in brilliant checkerboard patterns, and fur crop top jackets dyed in bright tones. Designer brands like Mike Vensel predicted that combining vintage 80’s looks with classic patterns like plaid would make headlines this season. His one-strap dress featured tri-colored plaid designs applied to a dress with a princess silhouette and a cinched-in waist. It received rave reviews!

This season’s looks had heavier fabrics and a more mute color palette. Keeping consumers on their toes, when it comes to trends, has always been a constant for Los Angles Fashion Week. The California fashion market will be overloaded with creative options in clothing for both men and women. There are so many boutiques and popular retailers, especially in quick fashion, that are dying to get their hands on the latest L.A. trends!  From evening wear to casual style, Los Angeles never fails to deliver.
