SQUARE TOE SHOES NOW AND FOREVER…

Some of the most iconic shoe styles are created through unconventionality. What was once considered “peasant shoes” (cirqa Medieval times), is now the most popular trend of the season. Square-toe shoes are reminiscent of the classic 1990s style. Square-toe sandals, kitten heels, and boots continue to dominate the runways every season in creative textiles and colors. High-end Brands like Bottega Veneta, have embraced this trend in a multitude of innovative ways by giving the square-toe shoe a modern twist. Fast fashion brands like Fashion Nova have also reinvented this shoe style for the shop savvy millennial generation. Over the years, square-toe shoes have received good and bad reviews. Regardless of their pros and cons, square-toe shoes’ impact on the fashion industry is evident. Why exactly are square-toe shoes so high in demand? To understand why means to divulge its history.

Square-toe shoes are just as described; shoes that are squared off at the toe either dramatically or just at the tip. This style of shoe is usually an open toe, since it does not follow the natural shape of the foot. It is suggested to add a half inch to your shoe size when buying square-toe shoes. Construction needs to be functional or they will be very uncomfortable otherwise. There are plenty of options for closed square toe styles, but they are usually low heel; no higher than three inches. The overall design dates back to Medieval times, but then burgeoned fashion wise in the 1960s. They were considered a necessary part of professional conservative fashion. Square-toe shoes really took off in the 1990s, and incorporated other details like the chunky sole highlighted in the 1970s. The most popular square-toe styles to date incorporate mesh and leather fabrics. Cut-out details are very desirable too, with a sexy flair. Quilted and fur textures are high in demand for square-toe shoes, along with braided detailing. The narrowed then squared-off toe is also popular due to its sleek and polished style. There is a square-toe style for all taste levels.

Square-toe shoes continue to be on trend due to their versatility in style. Despite what the general consensus is, square-toe shoes are very flattering. The style can be worn with casual and formal clothing. They work well with popular denim styles like wide leg, cropped, and high-waist silhouettes. Leather square-toe shoes with sexy kitten heels are being styled with silk-texture dresses and thick chunky cable knit sweaters. Mule style square toe shoes have an open back, and sculpted heel; perfect for elevating any look from night to day. The overall sensibility in fashion is free flowing and easygoing. The square-toe shoe style is nostalgic and will continue to be a favorite in fashion for years to come.
