Black History Month is an annual celebration recognizing the achievements of African Americans throughout time. In the month of February, we honor black Americans from all periods of United States history for their accomplishments, and resilience in the face of adversity.

The origin of Black History Month began in 1915, fifty years after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the U.S. That same year, historian Carter G. Woodson and minister Jesse E. Moorland started the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). Their mission is to research, preserve, and promote the achievements of black Americans and those of black descent. This organization sponsored Negro History week in 1926 in the second week of February, coinciding with Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass’ birthday. During this week, schools and communities throughout the nation held celebrations, performances, and lectures commemorating black history. Since 1976, U.S. presidents have devoted the entire month of February to historic Black Icons.

Conn’s HomePlus understands how special Black History Month is and its impact on the world. Reiniery Chavez, the store manager for our branch located in Loop Center Houston, Texas, expresses his sentiments for Black History Month.
